GM John Paul Gomez nakopo ang Bronze (SEA Games)

NASIKWAT ni Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez ang bronze medal para sa Pilipinas sa 27th Southeast Asian Games sa Myanmar 2013 International Chess Individual Rapid-Men.

Naitala ni  Gomez, isa sa top player ni National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., ang  tabla kay Singaporean International Master (IM) Go Weiming sa final round tungo sa 5.0 points sa seven outings para maiuwi ang bronze medal.

Tabla rin si Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son kay Indon GM Susanto Megaranto para makopo ang gold medal na may 6.0 points. Ginulat naman ni Vietnamese IM Nguyen Duc Hoa si Filipino GM Oliver Barbosa tungo sa silver medal na may 5.5 points.

Una nang naibulsa ni Gomez ang silver medal sa individual Chess 960 Rapid event o mas kilalang Fischer Random Chess na ang kampeon ay si GM Megaranto.

Nitong Miyerkoles, ang tambalan nina Gomez at Barbosa ang nangunguna sa “Transfer chess men pair” ayon kay NCFP Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.

Sina Gomez at Barbosa, ang Filipino dynamic duo ay ungos sa mga kababayan na sina GMs Darwin Laylo at Mark Paragua sa first round kasunod ng pagpapadapa kina  IMs Myo Naing at Zaw Oo ng Myanmar sa second round at pagbasura kina GM Cao Sang at IM Nguyen Duc Hoa ng Vietnam sa third round.

Sa isang banda ay nakamit naman ni 12-time national open champion GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., ang bronze medal sa men’s individual blitz chess competition.

Si NCFP Executive Director at Former Olympian GM Jayson Gonzales ang head coach ng Philippine Chess Team na suportado ng National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission at ng Philippine Olympic Committee.
