Mga bata sa gilas isasabak sa SEA games

DAHIL sa pagkampeon ng Smart Gilas Pilipinas sa katatapos na Super Kung Sheung Cup sa Hong Kong noong Linggo, halos lahat ng mga amatyur na manlalarong kasali rito ay siguradong isasabak ni coach Chot Reyes sa Southeast Asian Games sa Myanmar sa Disyembre.

Nagkampeon ang Gilas sa torneo pagkatapos na talunin nito ang Southern California-Fukienese Association, 81-77, sa championship game noong Linggo ng hapon.

Naging MVP ng torneo si Kevin Alas na isa sa mga manlalarong ilalagay sa koponang ilalaban sa SEA Games kontra sa mga bopol na kalaban.

“The objective of preparing this team for the SEA Games is achieved,” wika ni Reyes. “In so far as the overall Gilas program is concerned, it is nice to know that we have a core of players who know how to play together in a top-flight international competition.”

Nagwagi ng ginto ang Sinag Pilipinas ni coach Norman Black sa huling SEA Games sa Vietnam noong 2011.

“First, it was my dream to play for the national team, then, siyempre, w inning a crown is the happiest experience I’ve had so far,” ani Alas. “First time naming lahat halos to play against taller guys sa Dubai and here (in Hong Kong). But yun nga, I really learned a lot, to be mature and be tough.”

Nakauwi na ang tropa ni Reyes mula sa Hong Kong at mag-uusap silang dalawa ni PBA Commissioner Chito Salud ngayon tungkol sa pagpili ng mga manlalaro mula sa PBA para sa FIBA-Asia Championships sa Agosto dito sa Pilipinas.

“It’s fulfilling, but only so far as (the Hong Kong title) contributes to the big goal – winning the FIBA-Asia (championship),” ani Reyes.

Sinabi naman ni PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial na balak ng PBA na gawin ang mga laro sa Governors’ Cup tuwing Miyerkules, Biyernes, Sabado at Linggo para matapos ang torneo kaagad at makipag-ensayo ang Gilas para sa FIBA-Asia.

“Every team is committed to lend at least one player whom Chot will pick. On the part of the PBA Board, the support is all-out. Chot will be free to name his players. We are submitting four options to reschedule the Governors Cup which ends on July 28 if the playoffs go all the way,” pahayag ni Marcial.
